Neuropsychological Assessments

Neuropsychology is the branch of psychology that is concerned with how injuries or illnesses of the brain and nervous system affect cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioural functions.

Our team focusses on the neuropsychological assessments of cognitive, emotional, and behavioural functions in neurological, psychiatric, and other medical conditions.

Typical conditions might include traumatic brain injury, stroke, tumours, neurodegenerative disorders (such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease), epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or autoimmune disorders, as well as neurodevelopmental disorders (such as learning disorders, ADHD and ASD).

What role does a neuropsychological assessment play?

Neuropsychological assessment can play an important role in:

What does a neuropsychological assessment determine?

Neuropsychological assessment can help determine if the areas of weaknesses evidenced in an assessment make sense in terms of what is known about your history and any injuries or illnesses, or if there is something else that needs to be considered. Assessments can help predict how well you will adapt to any identified changes and what supports you may need.

How long does a neuropsychological assessment take?

Typically, assessments require four to five hours, including a clinical interview, followed by individually-administered psychometric assessment of brain function using standardised neuropsychological tests. Feedback is typically given during a subsequent appointment.

Includes all the aspects of a brief assessment, as well as a detailed evaluation of your cognitive abilities, including memory, attention, language functions, visuospatial functions and executive functions. This involves completing a comprehensive battery of tests on global cognitive functions and emotional and behavioural functioning.

Personality Assessments

These assessments delve deeply into understanding and formulating personality functioning and patterns of emotional and behavioural functioning. These assessments offer insights into how brain function influences personality traits, aiding in tailored interventions.

Intellectual Assessments

Intellectual assessments provide comprehensive evaluations of cognitive abilities, including memory, attention, problem-solving, and language skills. These assessments offer valuable insights into an individual’s intellectual functioning, aiding in educational planning, diagnostic clarification, and intervention strategies.

Other neuropsychology services

Our other services include neuropsychological rehabilitation, targeting neurocognitive or psychosocial functions changed by disease or trauma. We offer psychological treatment and support, as well as psycho-education services, to help individuals and their families make sense of cognitive, emotional & behavioural difficulties.

Neuropsychological rehabilitation

Neuropsychological rehabilitation is aimed at ameliorating deficits following an impact to the brain. Techniques may include paper and pencil-based tasks and computer-based tasks focusing on areas of personal weakness. Rehabilitation also addresses the implementation of behavioural changes in daily life.

Psychological treatment and support

The psychological treatment modalities employed are informed by, and take into account, the individual’s presenting concerns/symptoms and their treatment goals. Therapies may include, but are not limited to, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Supportive psychotherapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).

Psycho-education

Information is provided to the individuals and their families/psychosocial supports regarding the nature of the condition and the impact thereof on functioning. This information aids the individual and family members/other supports to better understand and cope with the illness. The information is also of value in assisting family to appropriately support the individual.

There are many reasons why Jessica chose to pursue a career in neuropsychology. What initially drew her was the combination of neuroscience and interpersonal contact. She is passionate about understanding brain function, how the mind works, and how impacts to the brain and nervous system affect cognition, emotion, and behaviour. She has a deep passion to make a meaningful impact on individuals and their families. The path Jessica took to get to offering this service started in her undergradraduate years, when she took anatomy and psychology courses. She was fortunate enough, and considers herself to be extremely lucky, to be one of the 6 candidates selected for the professional Neuropsychology Master’s degree in 2012, through The University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She says that she is still grateful to be part of such an exciting, wonderous field.

No, unfortunately Medicare does not provide funding for assessments. However, your private health insurer may offer funding.
